Arrived on a glorious Fall day, As the plane banked for the landing, there it was : the Duomo, the Campanile, the river. If it wasn’t for the seatbelts, I’d be jumping up and down the aisle in uncontrollable excitement. After a good’s night rest in a hotel recommended by the Rick Steves guidebooks, we strolled through town to cross the River Arno via the Ponte Vecchio., watching rowers slide underneath the old bridge. Proceeded to the Pitti Palace and its magnificent gallery, without the crowds of the Uffizi. Continued up the hill to the Piazzale Michelangelo. Nothing like a good walk to get feeling back into your body after planes, airports and traffic jams. What a magnificent day to be able to see Florence stretched out before us. Welcome to Italy, indeed. |
